Probiotic Smoothie for Gut Health

This healthy probiotic smoothie for gut health is an easy and delicious way to get more gut healing foods into your daily diet. It’s also packed with high fiber and high protein foods to keep you full and satisfied.

Gut Health Smoothie Benefits

By drinking this smoothie a few times per week, you’ll be providing your body with foods that are great for gut health, digestion, bloating, and liver health. Here’s a few of the benefits:

  • Prebiotics: The blueberries and bananas in this gut healing smoothie are considered prebiotics, which essentially provides “food” and nourishment for your beneficial gut bacteria allowing them to thrive.
  • Probiotics: By adding greek yogurt to this smoothie, you’re not only getting in extra protein, but also lots of beneficial probiotic strains to supporting overall digestion and gut health.
  • Liver Supporting: For the liquid base of this smoothie, I use yerba mate, which contains compounds that help the liver to produce more bile, leading to better absorption of fats.
  • Fiber: The added ground flax seeds provide a gut friendly source of fiber to help keep you regular and promote colon health.

Probiotic Smoothie Ingredients

This smoothie contains common ingredients you probably already have in your fridge or pantry.

  • Frozen Berries and Bananas: Not only do these provide prebiotics to help promote gut health, but they also act as a natural sweetener and thickener so the smoothie tastes delicious and has a smooth texture.
  • Greek Yogurt: Adds extra protein and probiotics while adding to the smooth texture of this smoothie.
  • Ground Flaxseeds: Always use ground flax as it’s easier to digest and absorb. You can buy pre-ground flaxseeds or use a coffee grinder to ground them up yourself.
  • Avocado: Extra healthy fats and nutrients.
  • Yerba Mate: Support liver health and gives a natural boost of energy.
  • Collagen Peptides: Added benefit of supporting your gut lining and hair, nail, and skin health.

How To Make This Probiotic Smoothie

  • Step 1: Cold brew the yerba mate over night for the best taste.
  • Step 2: Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

Substitutions and Variations:

This smoothie recipe is very flexible. Whether you’re not a fan of one of the ingredients or you want to keep it dairy free, here are some substitution ideas.

  • Dairy Free: Swap out the greek yogurt for a dairy free yogurt.
  • Banana Substitute: If you’re not a fan of bananas, swap them out with frozen mango, pineapple, or even frozen pre-steamed cauliflower for a lower carb option. All of these will still give you that creamy texture that bananas give.
  • Ground Flax: You can also use ground chia seeds and still get the added fiber benefits.
  • Yerba Mate: Feel free to substitute it with cold brew green tea. Although the health benefits aren’t exactly the same, green tea is still very beneficial overall and will also give you a natural boost of energy similar to yerba mate.

How to Meal Prep This Gut Health Smoothie

If you don’t have time to make this smoothie fresh daily, there are a couple of ways you can meal prep it without losing much of the nutritional value.

  • Freezer Friendly Jars: I use these freezer friendly glass jars whenever I want to go ahead and pre-blend my smoothies for the week for a quick grab-and-go meal or snack. Just make sure you leave about an inch or two of space in the jar (don’t fill it to the top) to allow room for it to expand.
  • Freezer Bags: The best way to maximize and preserve the most nutrition is to add the smoothie ingredients to a ziplock bag (pre-portion them out individually). And, when ready to consume, dump all of the contents in the bag into a blender, add the liquid and blend.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Yerba Mate Tea Leaves
  • 4 oz Water
  • 4 oz Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 1/2 C. Plain Greek Yogurt (or dairy free yogurt)
  • 1/2 C. Frozen Blueberries
  • 1/2 of a Frozen Banana
  • 1/4 of an Avocado
  • 2 Tbsp Ground Flax Seeds
  • 1 Scoop Bone Broth Protein Powder (or collagen peptides)

Instructions

  • Brew the Tea: For smoothies, the best way to prep the yerba mate tea is to cold brew it. Simply add the tea leaves to a tea pot with a strainer lid (or a regular glass with a lid) and let it steep in the fridge overnight. When ready to add it to the blender, be sure to strain the tea first.
  • Blend the Ingredients: Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Notes

  • I like to meal prep this smoothie recipe for up to 4 days and freeze it (using these glass jars).  I defrost them one at a time the night before.
