How To Make Homemade Jello with Gelatin (healthy, 2 ingredients)

Today, I’m showing you how to make healthy, homemade jello using just two ingredients – gelatin and juice. This homemade jello recipe contains no added sugar only natural sugars from pure juice. And, it has no additives, artificial dyes, or artificial preservatives. It’s gluten free, grain free, and dairy free.

And, not only is it a great, healthy snack for adults, the kids will love it too. This homemade jello recipe uses grass-fed beef gelatin, which gives this jello the added benefits of collagen and beneficial amino acids, such as glycine and proline.

Benefits of Homemade Jello with Gelatin

Unlike most store-bought jello, this healthy homemade jello is void of anything artificial. And, when you choose your ingredients right, this simple snack can turn into a superfood. Here’s why it’s so beneficial…

  • Beef Gelatin: Grass-fed gelatin is derived from collagen and contains beneficial amino acids, such as glycine and proline. Gelatin offers similar benefits to consuming collagen peptides, such as improved gut health and digestion, supports bone health, supports hair, skin, and nails.
  • 100% Juice: I opt for fruit or vegetables juice that have no added sugars, such as the Santa Cruz brand. You can always add raw honey to sweeten juices that are more tart, such as cranberry and cherry juice. But, the juice provides your body with immune-boosting Vitamin C and other beneficial antioxidants.

Here’s why I think you and your family will love this jello recipe.

  • It’s easy to make. It only takes a few minutes to put together. Then, the fridge does the rest of the work for you!
  • It’s allergen free. Because this jello recipe only contains two simple ingredients, it makes it free of most allergens, including gluten, dairy, peanuts, eggs, etc.
  • It’s super tasty and versatile. The flavor options when making homemade jello are endless. You can swap out juice options to make endless flavors.

Homemade Jello Ingredients

You only need two simple ingredients to make this delicious jello recipe.

  • Grass-fed Beef Gelatin. The gelatin is the most important ingredient because it’s what creates the “jello, jiggly” result. Do not use collagen peptides, protein powders, etc. It must be beef gelatin. I like Great Lakes Beef Gelatin and Vital Proteins Beef Gelatin.
  • Juice. Almost any type of fruit or veggie juice works with the jello recipe. The only ones you need to steer clear of is pineapple juice, kiwi, papaya, guava, and ginger because these contain enzymes that break down gelatin, preventing it from settling and forming into jello. I like using apple juice, cranberry juice, grape juice, homemade green juice, carrot/apple juice, etc.
  • Raw Honey (optional). If using a super tart juice, such as cranberry juice with no added sugars, you can sweeten it a bit with raw honey.

What’s the Best Type of Juice to Use?

You can use both fruit and vegetables juice to make homemade jello. The only exceptions are pineapple, kiwi, papaya, guava, and ginger. Pure mango may not work either, but I’ve found that if it’s mixed with other types of juice, such as apple or carrot, it works.

You can make your own homemade juice or buy store-bought juice. When I’m in a hurry, I like to buy store-bought blends. I opt for the juices that contain no added sugars, such as the Santa Cruz line.

Some of my favorites are apple juice, grape juice, cranberry juice, cherry juice, and juice blends, such as carrot/apple/mango or blueberry/pomegranate.

How To Make Homemade Jello With Gelatin

Making this recipe is simple and the prep time is only about 10 minutes. The refrigerator does the rest for you.

  • Bloom the Gelatin. Mix some of the juice with the gelatin powder and let it sit for 5-10 minutes to “bloom.”
  • Heat the Juice. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the juice to a light boil. Turn the heat off and whisk in the “bloomed” gelatin mixture. You can also add honey at this point to sweeten.
  • Refrigerate. Transfer the liquid mixture to an 8×8 pan and let it refrigerate overnight to set. In the morning, your jello should be ready and you can cut it into bite size squares.

  • While the gelatin is blooming, in a saucepan over medium-high heat, add the rest of the juice. Right before it breaks into a boil, turn off the heat. Add the raw honey at this time if you want it to be more sweet. Whisk to combine. Then, add the bloomed gelatin mixture. Continue whisking until combined. Pour liquid into an 8×8 pan or dish.

Notes

  • For the juice:  do not use pineapple, kiwi, papaya, pure mango, guava, or ginger.  These contain enzymes that break down the gelatin, preventing it from setting.  If the mango is mixed with other juices, I’ve found it’ll still set.
  • For the beef gelatin:  I like the Great Lakes Gelatin and Vital Protein Gelatin.
  • Storage:  Will last in the fridge for up to 5-7 days.

This was the easiest jello I have ever made. Blooming the collagen was a game changer. It dissolved quickly when I added it to the warm juice. Thank you!

  2. Would your Elderberry syrup recipe be good to use with gelatin to make gummies? If so, how much more gelatin to make gummies rather than jello?

  5. I haven’t made this yet, but I’m assuming it can be substitued for jello I have in a strawberry pie recipe.
