Okay, lets be honest here… no one I’ve ever met likes to cut onions. Not only do they make you cry (see solution to that below), but they can also be tedious to cut. Learning how to cut onions properly has made the biggest difference in the kitchen for me because I use onions in a lot of my recipes, so hopefully it’s helpful to you as well!
In the video below, I show you 3 ways to chop an onion, including dicing (most popular), slicing (2 ways), and how to cut onion rings.

How to Chop an Onion Without Crying…
So, there are a few tricks you can do to help eliminate those tears while cutting an onion.
- Use a sharp knife. A sharp knife will cause less damage to the cell walls of the onion which leads to fewer irritants being released.
- Keep the cut side of the onion turned away from you. This allows the irritants that do get released to be released away from your eyes.
- Chill the onion in the fridge. With a cold onion, less propanethial S-oxide will evaporate.
- Turn on your vent hood. Position your cutting board near the stove and turn on the vent hood while cutting your onion.
And, if your eyes are still super sensitive to onions, you can always wear some safety googles or glasses to block the irritants from entering your eyes.
